About the department:
- The department was started in the year 1997 as a specialized department and grew in stature to be a pioneer in this part of the country. The department boasts a number of credits.
- Its UG program is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
- The department also opted for NAAC accreditation and NAAC accredited the college with B grade for 6 years.
- The Post Graduate program, called ‘Master of Engineering in Aeronautical Engineering’ was added in the year 2003.
- The Doctoral (Ph. D.) Program has commenced from April 2008 in collaboration with the Anna University. Nine students have registered for their Ph.D.
- Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the premier company in India, specializing in the manufacture of civilian and combat aircraft, has considered the department competent to train their management trainees and has been sending trainees continuously for over four years. So far, 460 trainees have been trained by the department.
- The department is presently conducting two short term programmes, namely, ‘Master Diploma in Aircraft Design’ (6 months – 320 hours of training) with a student strength of 62 and ‘Modeling in Pro/E’ (6 months – 320 hours training) with a student strength of 61.
- The department hosted the XV NASAS (Fifteenth National Seminar on Aerospace Structures) on 15th and 16th October 2007. This was the first time that NASAS was conducted in a self-financing institution. Eminent scientists from all over India have participated and given lectures on recent advances in Aircraft Structures.
- The Aeronautical Engineering Association was inaugurated on July 2011. Dr. J.J. Isaac, Additional Director, NAL, gave the inaugural address.
- Dr. Mayilsamy Annadurai, Project Director – Chandrayaan, ISRO, inaugurated the “Park Research Centre”, on April 12, 2009. The center is equipped with 30 high end systems (320 GB Hard Disc, 4 GB RAM). Currently seven research assistants are carrying out project works under the guidance of Dr. A.P. Haran. They have already completed a project work on “Design and Development of Small Scale Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine” during April 2009, in collaboration with Pawan Mitra Aero Energies, Coimbatore. Currently the research team is working on
- “Low Reynolds Number Flow Performance of Small Gas Turbine Engine Turbine Blade Rows” which is funded by Aeronautical Research and Development Board (ARDB), DRDO, Govt. of India.(Total fund sanctioned is 19.22 lakhs)
- ‘Experimental Characteristics of Wind Turbine Blading over Full Zero to 360 Deg. Angle of Attack’, which is funded by Center for Wind Energy Technology (CWET), Govt. of India, Chennai. .(Total fund sanctioned is 15.8 lakhs)
- ‘Theoretical Investigation of Low Reynolds Number Performance of Small Engine Blade’ Which is funded by GATET, DRDO, Govt. of India. .(Total fund sanctioned is 12.315 lakhs)
- The department has also successfully installed a Cascade Wind Tunnel for the first time (in self-financed engineering colleges) for testing turbine and compressor blades and also a ‘Calibration Wind Tunnel’ for calibrating wind tunnel testing instruments, under the guidance of Professor Emeritus Dr. Soundaranayagam. The ‘Cascade Tunnel Test Facility’ was inaugurated by Air Marshal P.V. Athawale, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC AOC-IN-C, Maintenance Command, IAF Nagpur on 24th February 2010.
- Professor Emeritus Dr. Soundaranayagam is also currently delivering regular research oriented special lectures on ‘Boundary Layer Theory’.
- Center is planning to set-up an acoustic test facility for determining the impedance of afterburner liner. After obtaining the quotation for various instrumentations, the proposal will be sent to GTRE for sanction.
- Another project proposal on ‘Influence On Boundary Layer On The Performance Of High Aspect Ratio Compressor Blades’ has been forwarded to the Propulsion panel of ARDB, DRDOGovt. of India.
- The department is also currently working on the following in-campus research projects, funded by Chairman, Park Group of Institutions.
- Afterburner evaluation studies
- Combustor modeling studies
- Development and testing of 1.5 kW wind turbine
- Miniature rocket motor design
- Small Valveless Pulse jet for the Micro Air Vehicle applications.
Three papers on the above projects have been presented in the ‘International conference on recent trends in industrial research in engineering and technology’ held at Park college of Engineering. and Technology, Coimbatore, jointly organized by University of East London, UK, during 12th, 13th and 14th August 2010.
- The department has been churning out gold medalists in UG programs for the past seven years.
- Majority of our students are placed at ISRO, DRDO, NAL, HAL, ADA, and IAF.
