Department of Agricultural Engineering

About the Department

The Department of Agriculture Engineering at this institution was established in 2020, offering a 4-year Bachelor of Engineering degree in Agriculture Engineering as per the guidelines of Anna University. The department currently has an intake of 60 students. Agriculture Engineering is a field of engineering that focuses on the design, construction, and improvement of farming equipment and machinery. Agriculture Engineers utilize the latest technology to meet the challenges of environmental issues and activities, integrating technology with farming.

To provide practical training and hands-on experience, students are given opportunities to work with machine components and equipment, test agricultural machinery to ensure safety and performance, and gain exposure to water and environmental concerns. In the field, students receive training on crop production using tractor-operated farm implements. The department provides internships and training opportunities for students in farm machinery manufacturing industries, drip irrigation manufacturing companies, food processing industries, dairies, renewable energy industries, and more.

One of the main goals of the department is to provide technical support to farmers and entrepreneurs to establish small-scale industries

Vission

To educate agricultural engineers who can follow and utilize the technological developments that may occur during their careers as well as lifelong learning and recognize the needs of an environmentally sensitive society for scientific and eco- friendly development of the society and produce skilful and high quality engineers supported by up to date curriculum and scientific and industrial research to suit the industry both within the country and abroad.

Mission

To impart education and knowledge to students to make them competent enough to contribute towards agricultural and rural development so as to lead the nation at par with the world level scenario. To offer continual training to the industry to enhance their skill and be updated on global trends in agriculture, processing, and food and engineering, energy and farm implement research and technology by consultation with the stake holders.

Laboratory Details:

  • Farm Machinery Laboratory
  • Post Harvesting Laboratory
  • Irrigation Field Laboratory

Farm Machinery Laboratory

Students are performing combine harvesting experiment. A combine harvester consists of header platform, reel, cutter bar, crop divider, feeder conveyor, fan belt, walker, grain anger, tailing anger, grain container. A combine harvester is a vitol piece of equipment for modern farm which is designed for harvesting, threshing, separating, cleaning, collecting grain while moving through the standing stop.

Students are performing the cultivator experiment. The main parts of cultivator are frame, seeding attachment, shovel, tine, beam, handle. Cultivator used to prepare the soil for farming. They are used to remove the weeds. They make soil loose and pulverized to help in cultivation.

Post Harvesting Laboratory

Students are performing the disc plough experiment. A standard disc plough consists of individually mounted, inclined disc blades on a frame supported by wheels. These ploughs have from 2 to 6 discs blades, spaced to cut 18 to 30cmper disc. The disc ploughs are designed to work in all types of soil breaking, soil raising, soil Turing and soil mixing. It can be used easily at rocky areas.

Students are performing thin layer dryer experiment. This system refers to the drying of grains fully exposed to the ventilating air causing all the grains to dry throughout the drying layer. The moisture carrying capacity of air does not change considerable while passing through the product. In practical drying systems, a bed or layer is sufficiently deep to extract a reasonable portion of the energy from the drying air.

Irrigation Field Laboratory

Students are performing COF and angle of repose experiment. The angle of repose is the angle between the base and slope of the cone formed on a free vertical fall of the granular material on a horizontal plane. The size, shape, moisture content and orientation of the grains affect the angle of repose. The COF is also calculated from the experiment.

Students are taking sprinkler irrigation pipes to field. A irrigation sprinkler is adevice used to irrigate agricultural crops, lawns, landscapes, golfcources, and other areas. They are also used for cooling and control of airborne dust.Sprikler irrigation is the method of applying water in a controlled manner in way similar to rainfall.

Students are performing digital infeltrometer experiment. The digital infetrometer is a single instrument which is used to determine the infiltration rate of water into soil. This instrument is simple to operate and easy to use determine infiltration rate in as fifteen minutes. This instrument to measure the rate of water infiltration on all areas.
