Who is a Mechanical Engineer?

"All knowledge which ends in words will die as quickly as it came to life, with the exception
of the written word: which is its mechanical part" ~ Leonardo da Vinci

In career as mechanical engineer, an individual supervises the manufacturing of products. The mechanical engineer is a professional who is responsible for designing parts of a machinery system used in the manufacturing industry. He or she provides efficient solutions for developing various products such as vehicles, machinery systems, components and large plants. Mechanical engineering career paths are involved in all the stages of product development. He or she researches about the product, designs and develops it. He or she is responsible for installing and maintaining manufacturing or machinery systems.

Mechanical Engineer in a Nutshell

A career as mechanical engineer is a technical professional. He or she is responsible for the supervision of manufacturing processes and other technical staff. A mechanical engineer researches the design and develops equipment, devices and other components of a machine. Individuals who opt for a career as mechanical engineer work with other engineers for the successful completion of the project. A mechanical engineer is required to travel to the manufacturing site or customers’ offices to test the device and improve its efficiency.

What is the role of Mechanical Engineer?

In the career as mechanical engineer, one is responsible for designing and overseeing the machinery systems involved in manufacturing industries. He or she designs machinery that runs on a high-voltage of electricity energy. The role of mechanical Engineer involve electric generators, internal combustion engines, refrigeration or air conditioning machines, steam and gas turbines. A mechanical engineer may design elevators and escalators inside buildings and malls. Individuals who opt for a career as a mechanical engineer uses a computer system to design, run simulations and test the functioning of machines.

Identifying problems

In the career as mechanical engineer, one is responsible for identifying problems in a machinery system. He or she analyses mechanical and thermal devices to solve a specific problem arising in the proper functioning of the machine. Career as mechanical engineer investigates the failure of equipment or difficulties. He or she diagnoses faulty operations to recommend remedies.

What is the job outlook for Mechanical Engineer?

According to a report, it is expected that India will move up to the fifth position from the sixth position on the global manufacturing competitiveness index. Mechanical engineer jobs in India will make a stronghold in the manufacturing sector in the coming years. Hence, it will provide numerous opportunities to mechanical engineers in India. The mechanical engineer salary in India is dependent on the skills of mechanical engineers. Job opportunities for mechanical engineers are immense in India. Skill gaps should be bridged to make new graduates of mechanical engineering aware of the latest tools and technologies used in the industry.

Engineering Practices lab

The course is conducted for the first year students of all branches in Engineering. Minor services of equipments and machining and fabrication related to final year project work are being carried out in these workshops.
This lab is divided into following sub classification:

  • Carpentry
  • Plumbing
  • Sheet Metal
  • Welding
  • Foundry and Smithy

CAD Lab

The CAD laboratory in Park College of Engineering and Technology is a cutting edge lab facility available with the Mechanical Engineering, wherein all the students Department (UG & PG), research scholars and faculty can work with 2-D and 3-D design and analysis packages. The users are encouraged to learn, practice and apply the knowledge gained into their research areas. Initially this facility is introduced mainly for students to evolve concepts and convert it into a complete product.
The CAD lab provides digitally integrated environment where the users can design, analyze, simulate and build components. The Laboratory has the following section:

  • Engineering graphics
  • Geometric Modeling
  • Finite Element Analysis
  • Product Development
  • Rapid Prototyping

Lathe and special Machines

The lathe and special Machines shop supports to conduct practical classes of Manufacturing Technology I and Manufacturing Technology II for the students of Mechanical Engineering. The students are trained to operate all the above machines and learn various machining processes. At the end of the course, the students are asked to do a project work applying the knowledge gained during the course by the name Design and Fabrication Project.

Metrology Lab

Metrology is the science of measurement. Metrology Lab in our department is equipped with various measuring instruments, gauges and measuring machines. It makes the students to understand the basic principle involved in measuring process that suits for the respective product and its importance in the quality control (Control charts & process capability). The experiments are based on geometrical measurements, form measurements using various basic measuring instruments like all types of vernier, micrometer and dial gauges etc (Profile Projector ). The students are exposed to learn about the error involved in the measurements, calibration of measuring instruments.

Fluid Mechanics lab

The Fluid Mechanics Laboratory consists of flow measurement devices, head loss measurement in pipe flow, impact of water jet on vanes, flow visualization apparatus, hydraulic pumps and turbines. The students will experimentally demonstrate the knowledge gained from fluid mechanics. The students are encouraged to operate the experimental test rig to know the operational procedures and to familiarize the working principle with performance calculations.

Strength of Materials lab

Strength of materials laboratory is well equipped with destructive testing machineries. This lab course is offered in the second year for the students from various departments in the school of mechanical engineering. Students will be able to understand the theoretical concepts of solid mechanics course and enable them to apply it practically in this laboratory. Different types of tests are conducted in this laboratory as per standards (ASTM and IS) to know the various mechanical properties of a material such as young’s modulus, shear modulus, hardness, toughness, deflection, fatigue strength etc.

Dynamics Lab

The objective of this lab is to impart practical knowledge on design and analysis of mechanisms in the machine tools and automobiles. In Machine Dynamics Lab, the students are doing the experiments related to their theory subjects like Engineering Mechanics, Machines and Mechanisms and Fundamentals of Vibration and Noise.Various equipment like governors, gyroscopes, balancing machines and universal vibration testing facilities are available to understand machine dynamics. The working models of simple mechanisms like gears, cams and followers are very much useful to understand Basic Mechanical Engineering subject

CAM lab

The laboratory was established in order to provide our students with knowledge and hands-on experience in the area of Computer Integrated Manufacturing and considering the emerging research and development in the area of manufacturing segment in the industrial fraternity.  The objective of the CIM laboratory is to prepare the students industry ready and to acquire employability skills with the know of how the CNC programming and cutting tool path generation through CNC simulation software by using G-Codes and M-codes. In addition, it is aimed at to demonstrate and understand the importance of automation and its predominant role in the assembly line of shop floor, so that to satisfy the need of agile manufacturing to meet the urging need of global competitiveness of upcoming industries.
